The terrain in Malta is unique - arid in summer and lush in winter. Many common plants are aromatic. This oil is based on figs - uncork and sniff to be transported to the sun or put a few scant drops in your bath. Figs were the first cultivated crop in Malta, now with 32 varieties. Then there’s Oleander - you won’t walk far without smelling their vibrant flowers whose pinks contrast with the creamy limestone. My aunty lives on Oleander Street. Prickly pears are everywhere too - enjoyed as a fruit, juice and liquor. I remember the farmer coming to sell the fruit from the back of his van; my mother hoisting down a basket from Nanna’s house with some lira in it, the prickly pears quickly pulled up and eaten. They’re very sweet and juicy but I’m not a fan!
